Star Shooter is a non-profit organization that was created to aid abused and neglected children. I had the honor to interview the founder of Star Shooter Johnna Brynn Bockover. I believe this contest is a great cause no matter your skill level. I believe once you read our interview you will want to jump right in on this worthy cause.  Shall we get started then?

Q. I understand that Star Shooter is a non profit charity program and the main support for Shooting Star is though donations & fund raisers?

A. Star Shooter was established as a nonprofit organization July 2, 2008 and is currently pending approval for a tax-exempt 501(c)3 status from the IRS.

Star Shooter is completely funded by people who believe in what we do!  Star Shooter’s first fundraiser has been launched in the form of a PHOTO CONTEST for anyone in the world to participate!  For $25, you can submit your favorite photograph for a chance to win a new Canon 5D Mark ll or $2,000.  (Unlimited entries accepted.)  All details are here: http://starshootercontest.org.  Star Shooter will also accept donations and has a “Sponsor a Child” program.  To learn more on how you can help today, visit http://starshooterblog.org/how-to-help-now/.

Q. I am glad you bought the contest up. That was going to be my next question. How will the photo contest benefit the children of Star Shooter?

A. The photo contest proceeds will help purchase camera equipment for the children in Star Shooter workshops.

Q. Johnna, what gave you the idea to use photography as a tool to reach out to the children?

A, Simply putting my two passions together: helping children and photography.  I have worked with abused and neglected children for six years and received a Master’s in Psychology to further help children that are hurting.  After putting my hands in the trenches for a time, I felt to give life to children -and the only way to do that was to make sure I had life to give!  So, I must not deny my passion for creativity through photography, which fuels life in me -therefore, I’m able to deposit life into children that need to have a boost of life!

Q. How long have you been using this technique?

A. I first implemented teaching photography to adjudicated youth (youth that had committed a crime) in 2003.  It was a court-ordered “art therapy” for the youth, enabling their “treatment” to be expedited and then they could be released from their residential setting in which they were “sentenced” to.  After teaching two years to at-risk youth, I then completed my Master’s to gain more insight into the field of helping children.  Now, it has been almost one year that I have established Star Shooter and I can’t wait to see how high this organization will fly!

Q. How does photography help to reach an abuse child?

A. Photography can help an abused child in several ways, and in different ways unique to the child and their needs.  It is my experience and observation that photography provides a basic tool for expression for the child, enabling them to talk about subjects they may not otherwise talk about in a natural face-to-face setting with a therapist.  The camera acts as a catalyst for self-expression, change and healing for the child.   Photography can increase a child’s self-esteem, giving the them something to be proud about as they look at their photos and share with others.  Studies demonstrate that abused children are more likely to have difficulties in education, relationships and behavior.  I have observed children increase positive behaviors as well as demonstrate improvements in their education, while being enrolled in a phototherapy class/workshop.

Q. Have you had a chance yet to see how it affects their life in the long run?

A. Very good question.  Due to privacy acts, I lost contact with the children I instructed in 2003, 2004.  Although, I do know that some of my students expedited their treatment programs and were able to be discharged from their therapeutic residential settings and be integrated back into the community.  This is a very positive thing, as the children committed extreme crimes such as rape and arson acts.  The children in Star Shooter’s latest workshop have demonstrated extremely positive behaviors in the workshop, classroom and with their peers.

I believe photography provides a life-long tool for a child to communicate and express themselves, as well as provide the opportunity to allow a child to explore it as a career option.

Q. What if a photographer wants to help the children in their own community? Do they need a MA degree to hold a Star Shooter workshop?

A. Excellent question!  Because Star Shooter is barely one year old, we have a lot “in progress.”  We are receiving messages from interested photographers wishing to hold workshops in their community.  This is one of Star Shooter’s goals: to create a “Star Shooter: phototherapy for kids Instructor’s Handbook” so that photographer’s can be easily launched into helping children in their community!  As for now, photographers can help by participating in our photo contest, donate their used equipment or sponsor a child. View here for details: http://starshooterblog.org/how-to-help-now/.

Q. As we have established from your last answer. Star Shooter does accept new and used laptop, dslr, lens, wacom tablets, etc, that are still in great condition. Do you happen to have an address handy for those that just like to drop stuff in a box and mail it with no fuss or muss?
A. Yes Ma’am!  Star Shooter is more than delighted to receive used computers, cameras and lighting equipment.  All items can be mailed to PO BOX 44, Conway SC 29528.  Visit for more details:  http://starshooterblog.org/how-to-help-now/

Q. What are your goals for Star Shooter?

A. My goals for star shooter would be for us as an organization to remain true at all times to our Mission: “To equip children with a tool for expression using photography and allow them the opportunity to discover the “star” within themselves.” and our Vision: “For all children to be emotionally healthy to live out their destiny with confidence.”
If a child believes in himself, because we provided the avenue in helping him/her to “see” just how special they are -then our goal has been accomplished!

Other organizational goals are to take workshops internationally!  We already have an opportunity to conduct a workshop in South Africa this October with aids-affected orphans.  To provide an opportunity with photography to children who may never get the opportunity, is an awesome endeavor and I hope for Star Shooter to touch as many young lives as possible around our small world!  My personal and ultimate desire would be to work with children in the Gaza strip in Israel that have been affected by terrorism.  I’d rather have them learn to shoot a camera than a gun. :)

Q. Johnna, I think your cause is a great one, and what you do with children is amazing. Is there anything last words you would like to share with us about Star Shooter, the children, or contest that was not covered in this interview?

A. I am honored to be apart of such a wonderful photography community!  After 6yrs of working with abused/neglected children, I resigned from my career as an Intensive In-Home Specialist and took a major turn by entering the world of photography almost one year ago… and the warm welcome I’ve received from photographers has been amazing!  I am eager and more fueled than ever to help children in need -because of You!

Well everyone, that is the end of this interview but just the start for the children who will find their way to Star Shooter. Johnna tells me that the many children they work with faced issues such as anger management, sexual abuse and mood disorders.

To me, the goal of Star Shooter is to show these children that so often slip though the cracks of our society today that someone could and does love them. To show them that the fault does not lie within themselves. To give them an insight to what great people they are and will grow to be. That they are important and do matter to someone. Star Shooter plants a seed of self worth that is often lacking in those that have been abused. Star Shooter is all about the children. To help them grow, learn, and have faith in themselves and OTHERS though the lens of the camera. Trust is not a commodity that an abuse child has the luxury of experiencing. On the other hand, we can all help to change that, and here is how.

To enter the photo contest with a prize of $2000 or a new Canon 5D Mark ll

To make a donation through Pay Pal or by a Credit Card.

http://www.starshooter.org/donate

Don’t have PayPal and shredded all your credit cards? Don’t worry, you can still help the children by sending a check or money order payable to Star Shooter at PO Box 44
Conway SC 29528

Please feel free to spread the word of this great organization contest and blog. I know first hand that Johnna appreciates any help that helps the children.

I was so tickled when I got my Rebel XS that as soon as my battery was charged I was set to explore a whole new world though the lens. I had the memory card formatted, the neck strap hooked on and manual in hand. As I went though the day I found myself constantly adjusting the neck strap until I finally just started carrying the camera in my hand. Not once thinking about the neck fusion I had 8 yrs ago. Let me tell you, by that evening I was thinking about it alright and the next morning I was ready to burn that thing. I knew I would never use it again.

However, I had to have something so off to Amazon I go. I was hoping to find another neck strap that was very long so I could sling it across one shoulder and around the body. Instead I found the Bino Cam Harness. I wasn’t sure about it at first. It doesn’t look like much but it wouldn’t be hanging on my neck either. I wonder if it would pull on my shoulders but for 10 bucks I figured it was worth a try.

I’ve been using it for about a 2 weeks now, and I love it. The description on the amazon page are all true. It does stabilizes the camera against your body. When I bend over to pick something up, it is not bouncing off the ground. Yes it will go forward some but nothing like when you are wearing a neck strap.

The camera slide with ease and does not snag on the straps when you lift the camera up to your eye. If you don’t like the camera sitting on your chest you can easily adjust it by lifting the camera away from you and just move the straps around on your body with the other hand. In the back there is a leather piece that the straps pass though which holds the whole thing together.

I really like the snaps on it. It only takes a second to release the camera if you need to remove it from the harness and the snaps that stay on the camera are bound by leather. I thought that was a nice little touch. If gives you something sturdy to grab on too when you are hooking the camera to the harness.

I have to say I am very happy with this harness. I can wear it all day with my camera, I find it that comfortably. No need to keep adjusting it. No wear and tear or your neck. Light weight. I’ve found that it even helps to keep me steadier if I use it with my mono-pod. I just love to find these great little deals that bring such big rewards.

If you like to order your own harness follow the link below to Amazon.

Hi everyone, I have a special treat for you guys today. A tutorial by one of my best friends Twizzle. Take it away twizzle.

Blood Text Tutorial

This is my first tutorial I’ve tried to write for Photoshop. I wanted to try something simple yet effective. And I found that when trying this tutorial http://www.planetphotoshop.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2681 posted by my good friend Mitzs. It combines a Picture and title, making the title a cut out of the picture. And here’s one of my attempts: -

eldar2

What I wanted to show in this tutorial is how I achieved the Dripping blood text. But I also wanted it to stand out more so, I’m going to show you how I did:  -

image2

Step 1.

Open a new document in Photoshop, make it 500 x 500 with a transparent background.
Next Select the Text Tool with Font FRANKLIN GOTHIC DEMI COND, size 120pt Colour RED (unless you want alien blood then make it green!) Type the word BLOOD as below.

bloodword

Step 2

Now create a new layer. (This doesn’t need to be done but I feel it helps if you a mistake). Using the Brush tool set to a hard brush say 9pt. Draw lines down from the letters. If you hold the shift key while drawing your line you’ll get a straight line, but since liquids don’t fall in hard lines it wont matter if you wobble a bit. Don’t make all the lines the same length.

bloodlines

Step 3

Turn the text layer invisible, so you can now only see the lines. Go to Filter and select Liquify. Choose setting similar to below, and then select the Pinch option.

liquify

Now slowly drag your brush down each of the lines in turn. You should see them getting narrower where you click the pinch tool. Make them uneven, but don’t pinch them too much. To see how it looks you can always turn back on the Text layer.
Next keep the Liquify filter open and select the Bulge tool. At the end of each drop on the bottom just click and great a slightly larger drop. You should get something like: -

blooddrops

Now we still need to get rid of the hard lines of the lettering. For this open the liquefy filter again and select the Turbulence tool. Move it Horizontally across the individual letters, distorting the edges, making them look more fluid or melting.

bloodliquify

Step 4

Now select both layers, and merge them into one. We’re now going to spruce up the image with some layer effects. From the menu sleet Layer -> Layer Style and then blending options. In the Blending options windows use settings similar to below. (If using a Black background like I have at the end, you do not need a Drop Shadow, only use this is the layer is remaining transparent)

Drop Shadow

Inner Shadow
inner shadow

Outer Glow
outerglow

Bevel
bevel

Step 5

Finally create a new layer, paint it black and move it underneath the merges text layer. You should now have something looking like: -
image2

Nice, simple, easy, Blood dripping text.

Well I hope everyone enjoyed Twizzle’s tutorial. If you have any questions about anything please post them below, and if you liked it, please let him know that too.  Well that is almost it for the day. Just a few goodies left to share with everyone. :)

CPL stands for Circular Polarize. The brand that I bought I was Zeikos ZE-FLK58 58mm Multi-Coated 3 Piece Filter Kit at Amazon for 6.99. I am sure my pro photographer friends are cringing right about now. :) However, the ones that were recommended to me just aren’t in the budget right now. So I thought I would try these out.

There are 2 main reasons that I wanted the lens filters.
1. PROTECTION. Everyone told me right off the bat to get a UV filter lens if for nothing more then to protect the actually lens itself. As we all know, weird accidents happen everyday. If something was to happen and hit my lens it will have to take out the filter lens before it actually touches my camera lens glass. Since I do tend to have the luck of the Irish. Better safe then sorry.

2. Sunlight. OK, this girl just got her first DSLR after drooling over them for about a year. Everyone say the best light is at dawn and sunset. Heh, like I am gonna let that stop me from playing with my camera at high noon! So this is where the CPL filter really comes into play.

img_1313_c

As you can see from the image above I have no filter lens on at this time. Blinding isn’t it?

img_1315_c1

Ahhh, looking a lot better now.

img_1320_c

This one  looks just great to me after I dialed the ISO down to 100 considering it was taken at 11:30 in the morning with the sun shinning bright.(I know it is not as sharp as it could be. I am still working on that part.)  Sooo, while not a nice expensive CPL filter, I think it still has done its job. It will allow me to shoot and still have some nice images to add to my collection. In other words, this filter will give me the freedom to grab my camera and start playing when ever I want. No matter the time of day. So this lens filter and this brand gets and A+ from me. I believe it is the best 7 bucks I’ve spent in a long time. :)
